Where To Go For Sukkot 2011 Chol HaMoed Trips

Where To Go For Sukkot Chol HaMoed

(editors’s note: I wrote this post in 2011 and since then, Fun City has shut down.  Also note that The Bronx Zoo is free on Wenedsdays which is the first day of chol ha moed this year, 2012)

Apple Picking

The Jewish Holiday of Sukkot conveniently falls out in the fall every year which is also the height of apple picking season (on the East Coast at least).  There’s a great apple picking orchard near our house so we make it a habit to go apple picking every Chol Ha Moed.  The orchardsofconcklin near us also has blow-up bounce house rides and a corn maze that kids really love for a really fun filled out-door activity.  For other apple picking locations, MommyPoppins and NJ.org websites list where to Pick Your Own Fruits and Vegetables in New York, New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut.

If you live in the New York area and want to save some money on your chol ha moed outing, there are Free boat rides to be found in lower Manhattan as well as a Free carnival in Monsey, NY.

I just happened to bring 3 toddlers with me to pick up a Hungarian/English Dictionary from Barnes & Noble today and discovered the FREE play areas.  My kids were playing happily for over an hour.  I had to drag them away to go upstairs to get some Kosher Pizza and a train ride at Fun City since we were at the Palisades Mall.  There are of course, Barnes&Noble stores with free children’s play areas all over the country (unlike Border’s who sadly closed their doors last month).  Click here to find a Barnes&Noble location near you.

Bowcraft Amusement Park Sukkos Spectactular

The Bowcraft Amusement Park is available all chol hamoed sukkos with Kosher food and a sukkah to eat in.  All day ride passes are $17 and if you print this coupon parents get half off.

Fun City

If you find yourself close enough to Rockland County, New York during the Sukkot season, you can head up to the Palisades Mall and enjoy the day at a huge indoor amusement park and home to the only MagiQuest in the New York area.  For more information on Fun City and its Kosher Pizza, click on these links to read my posts on them.

Great Wolf Lodge

Once you get hooked on the MagiQuest fantasy quiz game, you can head out to Great Wolf Lodge and divide your time between their awesome, huge and so much fun indoor Water Park well built for toddlers, young & older children as well as adults along with their MagiQuest.

Sesame Place

The Indoor Water Park at Great Wolf Lodge looks to me like it was built by the same company as the Outdoor Water Park found at Sesame Place.  Sesame Place is another fun toddler and child friendly Chol ha Moed activity for families to enjoy.  For coupons and information about Sesame Place click on the link for my earlier post.

Dutch Country

Dutch Country, Lancaster Pensylvania is very child friendly and a great place for Kosher keepers during the Sukkot holiday because the three main attractions: Hershey Park, Dutch Wonderland and CherryCrest Farms all house Kosher restaurants with their own Sukkah to eat in.  Click on the links here for more information about these attractions and their Kosher food and coupons.

Video: Watch a Baby Chick Hatch

I managed to capture the birth of a baby chick on video – watch it below!

We had the pleasure of visiting Cherry Crest Adventure Farms on a recent family vacatation to Lancaster, PA.  Of all the rides, activities and things to do on vacation, by far, each of my childrens’ favorite activity was to hold and cuddle with the tiny newborn baby chicks on the farm.  The chicks that we were able to hold and pet are only 1-3 days old and next to them are eggs, warming in incubators, ready to hatch.

While we visited the farm we were able to watch 2 baby chicks hatch out of their eggs, one of which I managed to capture on video and am sharing with you below.  It can take a baby chick about 3 days to get completely out of his shell.  The process I witnessed and captured on video was his last 10 minutes where he cracks open the shell and slowly shakes it off of him.  It is a really adorable and beautiful experience.  I hope you’ll enjoy it too!

Here are some pictures of the baby chicks being held.  If you’ve never been to Cherry Crest Adventure Farm, I highly recommend it (and this is not a paid endorsement! )

Oh, and did I mention that they have hot Kosher Pizza!!!!

Undercover Waterwear – The Bathingsuit That Suits Your Lifestyle

(Scroll to the bottom for your 10% off coupon code) Now that summer is upon us, how are we all feeling about our bathingsuit bodies?  Well, I just got back from a mini-vacation where we took our kids to Great Wolf Lodge, a waterpark geared towards young children (you can read more about Great Wolf Lodge here).  Two days of sopping wet fun.  I am so incredibly grateful to Undercover Waterwear for sending me a Ladies Swim Skirt (with leggings) to review for them in advance.  I wore it the entire vacation and I was comfortable and appropriately dressed both for the pool and for my modest lifestyle the whole time.  Undercover waterwear’s swim wear (skirts, tops, dresses) are made in bathing-suit material that dries really fast when you’re out of the water and is so comfortable to wear and allows you to move, run, swim with ease and flexibility.  I wear this skirt to go walking outdoors or to the gym, to the beach and pool.  As a mother who is constantly running, and getting wet at kiddie pools all summer long, I’m getting great use of this skirt.  In fact, I even own a second one and recommend it to all my friends.

Here’s a little secret about these swimskirts and tops; even if you don’t keep covered for religious reasons, after a few kids, you may not want the entire world to see all your new bodily flaws when you go swimming.  Putting on one of these makes you look and feel appropriately dressed for swim or exercise while keeping what you want hidden, just so, hidden.

I really like their newest cool waterwear skirts as well.  Aren’t these styles fun!

10% off Coupon Code

If you buy now for the next week use the coupon code:KSJ12  to get 10% off and enjoy the freedom these new style bathing suits can offer youYou can visit Undercover Waterwear’s site here.

Lancaster, PA: Kosher Vacations & Discount Amusement Park Tickets

Lancaster, PA: Kosher Vacations & Discount Amusement Park Tickets

Lancaster Pennsylvia, otherwise known as Dutch County, USA, is home to the largest Omish population in the US.   It is a great place for Kosher keeping Jewish families to go on vacation because there are many kid friendly amusement parks, farms and activities, located in serene country neighboods, and Kosher food is available.

Activities in the area

Dutch Wonderland is a kid-friendly amusement park full of rides appropriate for younger children.  There is a Kosher meat restaurant inside the the amusement park right near the park entrance where you can get hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, chicken dishes and salads.  They also serve Kosher pizza but that has to be eaten outside the park in the picnic area.

CherryCrest Farms is another fun day of activities with a 5 acre long amazing corn maize maze, hay rides, a full petting zoo and 50 other bouncing, jumping country style rides and activities for children of all ages.  A Kosher Pizza stand run by the same people who run the Kosher Marts in the area can be found in Cherry Crest Farms as well.  This pizza can also be delivered to your hotel for a small fee.

Click here for more information about Kosher Mart food available in the area.

Stratford Railroad is another great activity for the children, they can take a ride on a Thomas train when he’s in town or just take a real old-fashioned train ride through town.

There are also some great children’s museums like the hands-on Museum and you can take any number of tours of Omish farms and horse & buggy rides.

Finally, Hershey Park which is about 45 minutes away from Dutch County, is another well-known amusement park with rides for younger and older kids.  Kosher Mart food stand can again be found right near the entrance of the park.

Discount tickets for Dutch Wonderland and Hershey Park can be purchased from the Kosher food vendors outside the park.  You go to the outside door of the restaurants and they sell you tickets to the park at 15 % off.

Twighlight passes:  When you purchase your tickets after 3pm for the following day, you can use these tickets to visit the park  for free after 3pm the day before the tickets are to be used.

Sesame Place Coupons

If you live or will be visiting in the New York tri-state area and are looking for a nice getaway with little children, Sesame Place is a great option.  Sesame Place features all of the famous Sesame Street characters like Elmo and Big Bird who can be found walking around greeting the kids, water park, parades, street party and of course toddler and kiddie rides.

You can find $20 off the price of admission coupons at most Rite Aid and Wawa stores. I know I grabbed a few the last time I was at Rite Aid.  Groups of 15 or more can get group discounts right at the gate.

Sesame Place is about half an hour away from Cherry Hill, New Jersey where Kosher restaurants and food can be found.

Visit here for information about some free activities in New York.
